Himalayas ‘tipping point’ के करीब: India में करीब 200 glacial lakes high-risk category में
नई study ने glacier melt, unstable glacial lakes और mid-century ‘peak water’ को Himalayan water security के लिए बड़ा खतरा बताया है।
Hindu Kush-Himalaya region में glaciers का mass loss तेज हो रहा है और नई study ने इसे “tipping point” के करीब बताया है। Reuters के मुताबिक Systemiq और regional research institutions की report ने monitoring gap और glacial-lake risk पर गंभीर चिंता जताई है।
Region में अनुमानित 40,000 glaciers हैं, लेकिन ground-based monitoring सिर्फ 21 glaciers तक सीमित बताई गई है।
India में 200 high-risk glacial lakes
Study के मुताबिक India में करीब 200 glacial lakes high-risk category में identify किए गए हैं, जिनमें 56 “very high risk” हैं। Glacier retreat के बाद बनने वाली lakes loose rock और ice से बनी natural barriers के पीछे जमा होती हैं और अचानक टूटने पर downstream flash floods पैदा कर सकती हैं।
August में Nepal-Tibet border के पास glacier collapse और cascading floods ने इस risk को फिर सामने ला दिया।
‘Peak water’ का मतलब
Glaciers melt होने पर शुरू में river flows बढ़ सकते हैं, लेकिन एक point के बाद stored ice कम होने से long-term flows decline होने लगते हैं। यही “peak water” transition है।
Himalayan region India के water systems, hydropower, agriculture और hundreds of millions लोगों की livelihoods से जुड़ा है। Study के मुताबिक यह region India की लगभग 18% land area है लेकिन natural disasters का disproportionate share झेलता है।
