Emmy-winning filmmaker Richie Mehta की नई film ‘Phoolan’ Toronto International Film Festival 2026 के Special Presentations section में चुनी गई है। Film का world premiere 16 September के लिए scheduled है - यानी 12 September तक screening अभी हुई नहीं है।
Project Phoolan Devi की पूरी life story को conventional biopic की तरह नहीं बताता। इसके बजाय film उस decisive 48-hour period पर focus करती है जिसने एक गरीब किशोरी को India की सबसे controversial और mythologised outlaw figures में बदल दिया।
Story approach अलग क्यों है
Production company Namah Pictures ने Phoolan Devi की autobiography ‘I, Phoolan: The Autobiography’ के rights लिए थे। Richie Mehta को project के लिए 2019 में approach किया गया, लेकिन filmmakers ने पूरी biography compress करने के बजाय narrow time window चुनी।
Official descriptions के मुताबिक film 17-year-old Phoolan के खिलाफ एक brutal siege और survival struggle को centre करती है। Makers इसे action conventions से अलग, power, violence और social hierarchy की कहानी के रूप में position कर रहे हैं।
Cast और festival context
Film में Sneha Kumari Phoolan Devi की भूमिका निभा रही हैं। Supporting cast में Aakash Dahiya, Prateek Pachori और अन्य actors शामिल हैं। TIFF selection international audience के सामने film की पहली बड़ी presentation होगी।
Phoolan Devi की legacy पहले से politically और culturally contested रही है। इसलिए film के सामने challenge केवल cinematic नहीं है - historical accuracy, representation और lived trauma को sensationalism से बचाते हुए दिखाना भी उतना ही महत्वपूर्ण होगा।
