Commercial timber extraction ने सिर्फ trees नहीं हटाए, बल्कि forest rights, institutions और mountain communities तथा state के रिश्ते को भी बदल दिया.
19वीं century में British timber demand ने Himalayas के कई हिस्सों में commercial extraction बढ़ाया. Tehri-Garhwal की Bhagirathi Valley में Frederick Wilson की कहानी इस बदलाव को दिखाती है: deodar और chir forests, जो local economies का हिस्सा थे, बड़े commercial resources की तरह treat किए जाने लगे.
Colonial forest administration ने customary access सीमित किया और forests पर state control मजबूत किया. Long-term significance ecological के साथ institutional भी है: आज conservation, community rights और forest governance पर होने वाली debates उन landscapes और legal traditions पर खड़ी हैं जिन्हें colonial period ने shape किया.
