India और Sri Lanka ने maritime cooperation की समीक्षा की है, जिसमें maritime domain awareness, search and rescue, counter-narcotics operations, piracy, illegal fishing और humanitarian assistance पर focus है. यह agenda दिखाता है कि Indian Ocean security increasingly shared information पर निर्भर है, केवल isolated patrols पर नहीं.
Maritime domain awareness का अर्थ sea-space की usable picture बनाना है, जिसमें vessel tracking, coastal sensors, intelligence और operational coordination को combine किया जाता है. दो neighbouring countries के लिए better information routine law enforcement और emergency response दोनों में मदद कर सकती है.
इस relationship में fisheries का sensitive dimension भी है. इसलिए maritime cooperation को security interests के साथ livelihoods और legal disputes को भी address करना होगा, खासकर Palk Bay और आसपास के waters में.
